Andries Boone has long been one of the leading lights of the Flemish folk scene. Both with the mandolin quartet MANdolinMAN and with his solo trilogy C.O.L.O.R.S (2019), T.I.M.E.L.A.P.S.E (2021) and C.O.N.V.E.R.S.A.T.I.O.N.S (2023), he has made surprising, eclectic and experimental albums that effortlessly transcend the boundaries of folk. On 13 November 2026 he releases Rhagium Inquisitor, his fourth solo album.
The title refers to the ribbed pine borer, a small beetle that lives under the bark of dead conifers and symbolises the layered soundscape of the new record. Every composition is inspired by local flora and fauna and bears the Latin name of a plant or animal, such as Viscum Album (mistletoe), Accipiter Gentilis (goshawk) or Lamprohiza Splendidula (lesser glow-worm).
On the album Boone fuses acoustic and electronic worlds. Traditional instruments such as fiddle, octave fiddle, mandolin, nyckelharpa, hardanger fiddle and baroque musette meet rock, modern chamber music and electronics. Boone recorded most of the instruments himself, with contributions from Marieke Van Ransbeeck, Oscar Beerten, Steven De bruyn, Frank Deruytter, Gwen Cresens, Annebelle Dewitte, Johan Van Neste, Anouk Sanczuk and Koen Toté, among others.
Live, the album is presented as a quartet or sextet. A concert consists of one 75-minute set.
This production was created in collaboration with WESP/Merodefestival and with the support of the Flemish Government.
